Driven on by stories of the fabled wealth of Troy, the Greek soldiers embarked upon an orgy of rape and destruction. On soldiers and civilians alike, they took out all the frustrations built up in the course of nine years of war. Caught unawares, the Trojans were unable to put up any resistance. Before long the corpses of men, women, and children littered the cobbles, and the gutters ran red with blood.Few of the Trojan leaders survived that terrible night. King Priam saw his sons cut down before him and was then himself slain. Among those who did escape were Antenor, protected by Odysseus as a matter of honor, and Aeneas, whose subsequent adventures were to become legend.
