Eighteen days later, as Odysseus sailed past the land of Phaeacia, Poseidon returned from his prolonged absence. Enraged at the sight if his enemy in full sail, he seized his trident, stirring up an immense storm which smashed Odysseus’ ship. He would have died if a sea nymph had not taken pity and helped him to shore. She gave him her shawl which protected him from drowning. Naked and scratched from being dragged over jagged rocks, Odysseus finally clambered ashore by a stream. He fell asleep under some bushes.
