Again disguised as a beggar, Odysseus had Eumaeus take him to the palace to beg, which was a common practice at the time. This gave Odysseus the chance to learn what kind of men he was up against. He soon discovered that they were low and cowardly. The suitors hurled insults at the beggar and their ringleader, Antinous, grossly insulted him, striking him on the back with a stool.
