Circe

Odysseus sailed on to Aeaea, where some of the sailors went inland, and found the witch Circe in her palace. She invited them in to eat, and all accepted except Eurylochus, who was afraid it might be a trap. He watched his friends hungrily devour the drugged meal. Circe then used her magic wand to transform the sailors into pigs. Eurylochus raced back to the ship and told Odysseus, who grabbed his sword and set out to seek revenge.

Protected by an enchanted flower given to him by Hermes, the gods’ messenger, Odysseus was immune to Circe’s spells. He found Circe surrounded by animals, previous victims of her magic. When her magic failed to transform Odysseus she grew fearful. He made her promise not to use any spells against him again and to return the sailors to human form. But then she enticed him to stay. He became her lover, and the sailors stayed on the island for a whole year.
