Cassandra told the citizens of Troy that their doom was imminent. When Cassandra was visiting Apollo’s sanctuary one day, her beauty moved the god. As a mark of favor, he promised her the gift of prophecy. But in return he sought to have his way with her. Cassandra refused him. Apollo sought revenge. He could not take back his gift, so instead he added a cruel addendum to it. No one would ever believe her predictions.

From then on, Cassandra could see only too clearly the tragedies that lay in wait for her people. But whenever she thought to warn them, she was greeted with skepticism. The Trojans believed she was mad. She saw the true nature of the horse, but could do nothing to stop it.
