Odysseus was shipwrecked and he alone survived the whirpool of Charybdis once more. He drifted for nine days, coming to land finally on the island of Ogygia, home to the beautiful sea nymph Calypso. She fell in love with the handsome castaway and, after giving him food and wine, seduced him. Calypso held Odysseus captive on the island for seven years, but he soon grew tired of her and would sit staring forlornly out to sea, longing for home.
