About
Artist, satirist, and occasional blogger, Andrew has been drawing since he could hold a crayon. He started with squiggles, but they were darned good squiggles if he says so himself. And he will, just ask. As a freelance designer, I provide cost-effective and compelling web and graphic design for businesses, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions in the D.C. region and beyond.
Why Geeky Muse?
The name is really a double entendre. First, I thoroughly enjoy Geek culture and find inspiration therein. Hence a geeky muse. So what is a muse?
The Muses in Greek mythology are the goddesses who inspire the creation of literature and the arts. They were the source of knowledge, related orally for centuries in the ancient culture, that was contained in poetic lyrics and myths. Originally said to be three in number, by the Classical times of the 400s BC, their number had grown and become set at nine goddesses who embody the arts and inspire creativity.
Hence Homer’s invocation of the Muse in his Odyssey:
“Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns/ driven time and again off course, once he had plundered/ the hallowed halls of Troy.”
So Geeky Muse is both a tip of the hat to geek culture and a pun on the original Greek muse. Not to mention the implications of my own personal musings and being amused.
But what is a Geek you ask? (as a friend did this morning)
I like to define Geek as a person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest. This definition is very broad but because many of these interests have mainstream endorsement and acceptance, the inclusion of some genres as “geeky” is heavily debated. Thus as an alternative I also propose Geeks be defined by one single attribute, the pursuit of knowledge. Moreover, the love of knowledge.
Geeks are makers, doers, thinkers, and passionate about their interest—even if it’s an interest dujour. And that which makes them passionate, which inspires them is their Geeky Muse.
