Ars Technica has an interesting article today on the much desired hotspot feature that Verizon is offering in conjunction with their new iPhone. That wireless hotspot feature will cost users $20 per month in addition to regular data charges. That might seem rather costly, but here’s a quick yet telling comparison to AT&T that will shed some new light.AT&T iPhone owners currently cannot share their 3G connections with multiple users over WiFi in the same way Verizon iPhone owners will be able to. Instead, AT&T users must tether an iPhone to their computers via cable or Bluetooth. They also must pay the $20 per month extra as per Verizon. The difference is they don’t get any extra data allotment for tethering.
Verizon, on the other hand, is giving the hotspot its own 2GB pool of data to pull from that is separate from the phone’s individual data use. It might not seem like a lot, but AT&T users get no extra allotment. Overage charges, anyone?
Also, Verizon says they’ll be switching to a tiered usage system soon. So don’t expect to have a $30/month unlimited data use forever.
